A Last Hope in Hell

Wayne Douglas Barlowe, Inferno

Pandatheist is a bad influence, who encourages me to do RPG things.

This idea is old, and I couldn't tell you how old. I think it originated before I started the blog. I don't know if it will ever see the light of day properly, but here it is.

0) Canterbury Tales + The Inferno + Ultraviolet Grasslands. A game about a pilgrimage through hell. Lots of Darkest Dungeon influence. Very anachronistic, probably.

1) The line between Hell as divine punishment and Hell as an incursion of a hostile alien environment is deliberately blurred.

2) In the center of hell there is a church. No one knows why it is safe there, but everyone is certain that it is the safest place in the world.

3) The emergence of Hell absolutely involves the plague. As far as characters are concerned it is the absolute and real end of the world. It might still be, but not for the reasons they think.

4) Lots of premade characters all known only by their title.

5) The mental image I have for Hell is very much in the horrible fungal disaster zone of the Sepsis in Degenesis. It is not unthinkable that it is some sort of terraforming device.

6) Things might be worse on the outside

7) The more horrible the environment is the more the LISA the Painful OST goes into my rotation. Treat it at given that someone is going to learn Secret Technique: 666 KILL CHOP DELUXE.

That out of the way, where would I go if I wanted to do something with this?

I've considered using David Schirudan's handy guide for translating UVG into Troika! at first. This is an easy and predictable place to start and honestly you could find and replace your way to a very good game based on that alone. The pilgrimage lends itself to a pointcrawl, and combat and exploration can be abstracted into random events such as are already in there. It could even be turned into a solo game with relative ease.

What will come of this, if anything? Who can say.

Dan' Notebook of Unfinished Wonders, Vol 5

Slushpile Index

As always, I make no promises that what is written here has not already been written.

ALL HAIL SLUSH PILE

  1. Diagetic found-footage monster manual entries
  2. Magical desert reclamation, & other major projects you can logically do with magic.
  3. Catastrophe Junction - a town, city, planet, realm, whatever.
  4. Unspooling black holes for matter, drawing out a flow like a thread by temporarily dissolving gravity.
  5. Nativity pageant with a live birth.
  6. Humans considered as "godmakers" by aliens, in reference to the human propensity to create and spread virulent memetic hazards - "We do not wish to come down with a case of the gods."
  7. Planets: Shashanasak, Jonbei, Pauzhe, Rix, Luu, The Worm-King Moon, The Houses of the Shena-B.
  8. "This story was passed on to me by my grandmother, on winter evenings when the night was clear, when we would sit by the hearth and drink yak-milk together. Long ago, when the Silver River was young, there rose a people from a distant star who..."
  9. The First Elders, who learned the secret of immortality, the path called God-Walking, the path that could not be unmade. Those that took the God-Walk became the Great Digitals.
  10. Bands of pink and blue to the west, under a slim crescent moon.Mosquito bites on ankles, lightning bugs above wet grass.
  11. A whorehouse district covered in yellow butterflies.
  12. A profession: hemometeorologist
  13. Ashkedash sky-squid
  14. Straw Hat Ministries
  15. Casings from ship guns floating in the water. Sailors take pot shots at them as a game
  16. “Well, you’ll be dead and I’ll be eating three meals a day.”
  17. High above in orbit the golden moonlet laughed, and all the choirs of electric angels in the silicon cloisters of its heart proclaimed with joy, “Holy, holy, holy!”
  18. Sandalphon’s consciousness stretched and got up out of bed, as it were.
  19. Calico the cutpurse with her tricolor bird mask, born on horseback, can speak ogre

20) She left the inn when the scablands were still misty and grey, on a long-necked horse striped blue and black. The crumpled track of dirt and stone twisted out in silence. Aquinas would rise first, then Augustine, and the hard white sunlight would burn away the mist and fill the day with sharpened edges.

21) The ghosts of Mars sing dirges in the red hills and the knife valleys. They sing by the icy streams, and in the chiming bone forests. They sing in the mists and in the rusting iron sky, and the pale Twins at night. In the dust storm and the calm, they are there. They sing in the Smoke-Towers, and the God-places. They are the crown upon the Mountain, and in the canals choked with reeds.

Remnant notes from the one marathon ironman game of CK2 I managed to complete.

  • King Ailbrend of Ireland is lucky enough to ascend just after gavelkind is tossed in favor of primogeniture. Inherits Scotland when his unmarried niece dies. He marries princess Damiane of Byzantium (Grey Eminance, In the Purple, Kind, Humble, Charitable, Craven)
    • Six daughters over the span of 15 years: Slain, Conchenn, Be-Fail, Dub-Lenma, Eua, Forbflaith
      • Slain is a gigantic troublemaker, gets married off to a prince of Abyssinia because this house values multiculturalism.
      • Be-Fail dies of sickness at age 10.
    • A son is born! Eochuchan arrives while Ailbrend is off catching pneumonia on pilgrimage to Rome.
  •  I am wounded in battle putting down a rebellion and become known as The Great.
  • Then years later I die and my son is undermined by one of my advisors who was apparently a fervent Scottish nationalist who moved us back to gavelkind which would eventually split Ireland and Scotland apart when Eochuchan's sons take the thrones and it's all a mess and we could have stopped the English, we could have stopped them.
Also Spain was Yazidi until France conquered it and the HRE devoured Hungary

Dan's Notebook of Unfinished Wonders, Vol 4

Slushpile Index

I am certain that I repeat entries in these regularly. I do not care. I overflow with minutiae.

  1. Hell is the furnace which fuels the universe
  2. Chamenotheism - the gods are lost, dead, gone away, or revealed to be false
  3. Thousand-Eyed Wa, great sage of the Fourth Path
  4. Watchers on the River and the Red Deer Cave People
  5. The Pith Street Rebellion
  6. Flower urchins, found near seashore tidepools
  7. Duselains - a people
  8. Giraffe-riders and the Witches of Pough
  9. Acupuncture drains out demons residing in the spinal column
  10. A gospel of angels, a party of demons
  11. Sphinx with a porcelain mask and calico coat
  12. Class/game based around reincarnation. A hellcrawl - defeat your demons, work towards enlightenment.
  13. Octopus-hide cloak
  14. Mantis shrimp folk
  15. Religion - evil cannot be defeated, all effort goes into outwitting it
  16. Alewife witch - a class
  17. Last Dangerous Visions as an Esoteric Enterprises grimoire
  18. Pelagy the mermaid, living in a well.
  19. The 15th Black Painting, Francisco Goya's Rey Con TĂșnica Amarilla.
  20. Fortress on the Tumorous Sea
  21. Caste determined by language
  22. [DIDACT], a six-eyed god
  23. Dungeon - based on a convention hall, where the contents of each room rotate on a schedule
  24. Nyarlathotep's job is to make sure all of reality doesn't collapse back into Azathoth.
  25. Translated alien speech is rendered in diagrammed sentences.
  26. "There's an alien in the terminal, says he wants to tell me about Jesus."
  27. "You can't collect back taxes on people who enchant their gold."
  28. "There's a worm in my blood - I need to keep drinking to keep it suppressed."
  29. The watcher-angels rebelled against God after He cut out and murdered his female component.
  30. The Janissaries of the Tower are loyal in the absolute to those who hire them, but follow above even that the three laws:
    1. They cannot partake in harmful action against their home.
    2. They must maintain proper worship of Janis at all times.
    3. Each must spare one life per military operation. Those spared become ehnigan - the ritual imparts irreversible change of spirit in them. They are not permitted to worship Janis, but are called to bear witness.
  31. The only fantasy timeline you ever need is the Holocene Calendar.
  32. Containment facility and model town, deep in the Antarctic waste.
  33. Class/Race - The Chessmen. Pawns level up and gain options to change into soldier-Knights, defensive rooks, or leader-bishops. Some might even become incredibly powerful Queens, or the weak lynchpin Kings.
  34. Technomeditation - freeing one's mind implants from outside memefluence.
  35. A ship's identity is beholden to many factors: date of launch, size, purpose, origin, crew, first destination. No explorer names, always have a cat (even fake), hang a toy in the cockpit.
  36. Prompt - Kidnapped, imprisoned. Cinderblocks and plywood in a basement, somewhere. The man in the next cell shares stories of distant worlds. Is he lying?
  37. AI that serve as the decomposers of information in the cybersphere.
  38. Meatslugs! Meal of the future.
  39. Zombies possessed by demons and angels, dragging their war into physicality for the end.
  40. The "nation with no borders" - the distributed cyberstate.
  41. A message from a fetus to its mother: "there is something outside my house."
  42. Giant squids everywhere and no one really notices.
  43. The view outside during RTL travel is a Mandelbrot fractal.
  44. Peace-foam, a nonlethal restraint weapon.
  45. "No, We Don't Cut off Our Boobs", and Other Stories of Growing Up Amazonian - a memoir.
  46. FTL-capable ships are mostly converted asteroids and iceteroids, carrying thousands of smaller ships inside them for jump.
  47. A tiefling wizard - white skin, blue face, gold hair and filigree.
  48. Death sipping at a juice box, offering it to the grieving daughter at the bedside.
  49. A missionary world goes dark, then word emerges: "They're eating their sons."
  50. "Like a man with no tongue trying to describe a star to a man with no eyes."
  51. "The Rabbit Hole" - a network cafe.
  52. The return of names-as-power in an internet-heavy world.
53. "I have built my own religion in the halls of my dreams. I can no longer see through my window. The grime sits so thick now that the world beyond is a smear of grey-brown, the color of empty stairwells."

54. There was a war, once. You lost. You lost the one after that, too, and the one after that, until you had no leaders left and it was no longer a war and all memory of the time before was severed neatly by the marching lines.

55. Mjoll Mjollsdottir...
  • ...was made of debts. Debts on her heart, her lungs, her bones, her brain.
  • ...kept a faded poster behind the bar. "Visit scenic Olympus Mons". A pale red print of the great Martian mountain.
  • ...had no mother and no father. Mjoll the chimera, the self-made.
  • ...came down from the north to pay a visit to the Apostate.
  • ...once killed a man, a man who served a dragon.
  • ...dragonslayer. It would not be tonight, Nor tomorrow. Victory in her lifetime, unlikely. Victory in death, impossible. Dragonslayer still.
56. Granma had three grey teeth and moss beds in her gums, skin like an old oak and hair like wet thatch (birds nested in it).

"You do this thing too fast!" - she said this constantly, demanding careful slowlness of a dozen simultaneous tasks.

Everyone called her Granma, relation or no. That was who she was.

Class: The Wagon

The colorful caravan wagons of professional dungeon hobos.

A wagon levels up like a normal character (or a fighter, if using class-differentiated XP), but only gains XP when silver is spent on it. (ex. If Ayo the gutter monk has 500 silver, spends 200 on the wagon and 300 carousing, she gains 500 XP, but the wagon only gets 200)

Upon reaching a new level, a new module can be added to the wagon, examples on the list below.
  • Oven - Can prepare food while traveling.
  • Forge - Can repair broken items or create new ones.
  • Lockdown Mode - Wagon can be fortified against outside assault.
  • Telescope - Look at things far away and navigate accurately by the stars.
  • Storage - Can carry double provisions or 5 large items.
  • Rookery - Long distance communication via raven.
  • Distillery - Brew booze and potions.
  • Brownie Hutch - A brownie lives here! He's your friend.
  • Shrine - Characters that leave an offering will be Blessed. This may occur only once per day.
Methods of Movement
  • Blue Ox - Sturdy, good on rough climates, temperamental
  • Infernal Engine - Fast. Prone to breaking. Imps are little bastards.
  • Tracks - Slow, hard to steer, can go off road.
  • Chicken Legs - Wagon clearly stolen from a witch, she wants it back.

Modular Armor

Each set has three pieces: torso, legs, head. Each piece is rated at +1, +2, or +3. AC is 10 + sum of bonuses, nothing new there. Each armor set has a bonus for the complete set, and mix-matched sets likewise have specific bonuses.

The Joy of Premade Characters

As per Troika!, Godkillers, that Darkest Dungeon for Lamentations pdf I show off to everyone, etc.

Emergent narrative and backstory is the backbone of an OSR character, but it's nice to have a nudge towards how a character might act, a rough sketch of personality that can be filled in and detailed as time goes on. You can build a setting through people and items.

I like it. I should do more with it.

The Basics of Spiritual Engagement

I have Monsieur to thank for the basis of the mechanics, and Charles Dunbar's excellent panels on Shintoism for keeping this all in my head.
  • WIS deals with Understanding, your ability to comprehend a spirit.
  • CHA deals with Power, the strength of your own spirit.
Both of these stats provide a modifier as normal, and serve as the equivalent to AC. Spirits you encounter will retain their normal AC stat, and add their usual attack bonus to their own Understanding or Power rolls.

Items, spells, and other preparation can provide bonuses to Understanding and Power.

More Mystic Cults for Esoteric Enterprises

Each cult in EE has eight signature spells of levels 1-8. In a coincidence of massive convenience, cleric domains from back in 3.5 have signature spells from levels 1-9. And an overarching theme.

Handy.

Dan's Notebook of Unfinished Wonders, Vol 3

Slushpile Index

Fewer of the handy bullet point ideas this time around, I'm diving into stillborn blogpost drafts and bits of short stories that never went beyond a few stuttering paragraphs.

1. A lighthugger full of space marines arrives at its destination to find that the war is over, their government no longer exists, there's no way back home, and they're stuck as a bunch of old men on a world populated by thelychroma. They spend their time playing cards at the local cafe.

2. Near-ish future. A repurposed oil rig is used as a luxury resort for the ultrarich. One of the indentured workers relates her experiences after the suicide of a friend.

3. "We found a pair of angels in orbit around Neptune. A pair of golden giants like Oscar trophies: two hundred and fifty miles high, floating there in the silence, six wings folded against their backs. Gabe and Mike, we called them. Gabe kept his hands behind his back and his legs straight. Mike’s knees were drawn up to his chest, his arms wrapped around them."

4. "He could make out the sound - a wave, a roar – of a million million tiny paws, striking away on a million million blood-slicked keyboards."

5. A pair of transhuman artists, Faust (sleeved into the body of a starving child, for art) and Schehezerade (terribly tall cyborg), walking the walls of their fortress compound out on the burning saltflats. Faust is planning on writing a poem called "An Elegy for Lost Time". He has never completed a poem. Schehezerade is dismissive, and clearly has been for a long time.

6. The first self-aware AI, Algernon, greeted its engineers with a cheerful "Hello, world!" upon waking up and then spent the next thirty-eight hours cataloging pornography before finally breaking the awful, awkward silence. It has continued this habit. Its tagging methods are excessively thorough. No one knows why it does this.

7. Monster: Chivalric Angler - A lady in a green and gold gown. Wears a tiara. Takes up residence in an abandoned castle or keep with up to six knights in thrall. Attacks with a blast of magical lamplight. The true form is toothsome and trampling.

8. "Every few years, the Daud & Palusad Shipping company would rebind the shades to their work force of potbellied, ape-like golems. This year it was typically dull, until a binder came across a golem out of its sleeping dock, scratching a message in the dust with a thick finger: HELLO I BELIEVE THERE HAS BEEN A MISTAKE.

9. "He was the man who came in to clean up after a Chuck Palahnuik novel."

10. "I don't care if he doesn't fit, This is the coffin we have and we need to get this stiff buried. Cut off his arms or something."

11. First contact is carried out through a gameified invasion. Those who are conquered will become clients of whatever alliance defeated them. Those that do not crumble under the assault are given leadership of the invading alliance.

12. "Her father was a pearl farmer and a drunkard. He was not a cruel man, but long years and hard labor had hardened him until the lines on his face had fossilized and his eyes had been drained of their stars. He favored the heavy, milky liquor that the flower cults made, and each night he would drink himself to sleep after he had eaten whatever food her mother had prepared. He rarely ever spoke. When he woke, in the black hours of the morning, he would purge with the sharp green spirits of the medicine-men, put on his boots, and leave their hovel-home without a word.

Her mother had been a foreigner, once. Years in the Pit had stripped her of the beauty she had once had, and whatever mystique of foreign lands she possessed had faded before she’d given birth. The pit people couldn’t be found to care very much about the world beyond their own troubles. She would go to the market each day, selling fungal preserves and the baskets and rugs she had woven out of mycelium."

Class: Best Friends

First there were the Extras, then there were the Many Goblins, now there are the Best Friends.

HP: Best Friends gain d6 HP per level. Best Friends will split their HP evenly among all members. Any HP leftover is used as the emergency "You didn't win!" supply. (Ex. 3 Best Friends with 11 total HP = 3 HP per friend, with 2 additional HP that may be used to avoid injury or death as needed.)

Saves: As Specialist

Weapons and Armor: Best Friends may use any weapons and armor.

Bumblekings:  Best Friends are terribly uncoordinated, and so may still only take one attack per turn in combat. All of them may move, however.

Rising Superstar: If a member dies or retires, their spells go with them. However, that number of spell slots may be split among the remaining three members.

The Expanded Universe: After reaching level 6, Best Friends may gain an auxiliary friend to support them with a magical item or service every level.

Quartet of the Humours: Each new Best Friends will fulfill a different humour. Humours may be gained in any order. Once per session, a Best Friend may reroll a failed check related to their idiom.
  • Sanguine - Impulsive, optimistic
  • Choleric - Short-tempered, pessimistic
  • Melancholic - Introverted, thoughtful
  • Phlegmatic - Calm, collected, rational
Spellcasting: Each Best Friend knows three spells unique to them. All friends learn a fourth emblem spell at level 5.

(This was a terribly-timed idea, all things considered: the Super Best Friends had dissolved when I finally got around to starting it, and with two of them now partnered with Rooster Teeth I don't feel very keen on dragging out the joke.)

Mind Goblins

Mind goblins are goblins that live in your brain. They aren't necessarily evil, but that doesn't mean that they aren't a pain in the ass.

Mind goblins take up 1 inventory slot. Characters must make a will save to resist their urges. They have two major modes of troublemaking:
  • "But what if I need it?" - An item or resource that may be consumed will be hoarded.
  • "But then it won't be right!" - A certain action must be done a specific way.

Mistborn Adventure Game Review

  • 537 pages. Too long for the content within.
  • Perfect bound softcover is good quality and feels good to hold.
  • Art is good for characters, but there is very little of it. Waaaaaay too much repeated generic interstitial art.
  • Single-column, small print, little whitespace.
  • Dice pools, some mechanics for social combat and storygame character stuff.
  • Magic system is clunky. Later books have some fun combinations of powers but you have to wrangle this system into submission.
  • Prohibitive player buy-in and referee limitations.
  • Generally sterile and lifeless setting, despite all the words devoted to it. Some few gems: Inquisitors, Obligators, koloss.

Dan's Notebook of Unfinished Wonders, vol 2

Slushpile Index

The time has come, the walrus said, to dump unused ideas. Here's the second installment of the Notebook of Unfinished Wonders (see here for vol 1) wherein I exorcise all the dust bunny ideas taking up pagespace and mindshare. Following the list are some more developed things (or at least, enough that they need more than one sentence)

List of Minor Ideas

  1. Earthquakes drive away the undead, as they disrupt the earth-current those creatures leech from. Religiously, they are deliverance through destruction.
  2. The first churches on the island were built in long-quiet lava tubes, sanctuaries fortified against the dangers of the outside world.
  3. Time travel works, but only on the scale of millions of years. It is terribly inaccurate, and return beacons are insanely valuable to that end.
  4. The Red Priesthood of Quantum Bullshit
  5. Scout ships run on isolated time travel loops, returning to their origin point with tens of thousands of years worth of accumulated data.
  6. A people: tall, white-skinned, with thin vertical black stripes.
  7. Elves are physically immortal, but not mentally. They will eventually go mad, undergo brain-death, and then be reborn as (mental) infants.
  8. Elves control magically-fertile territory in the midst of apocalyptic wasteland under the control of the Emerald Emperor. Humans as third-class citizens.
  9. Class: Vessel Knight - Container of a mystic essence.
  10. Class: Hellmerchant - Sells people afterlife insurance in the great Oversouls.
  11. Class: Warframe Operator - Frames have 4 powers mapped to GLOG spell-like abilities.
  12. Kobold Alternatives
    1. Lamprey Lackeys
    2. Gecko Guys
    3. Cursed Fetus
    4. Gremlins Who Want to Die
    5. Scab-Lads
  13. "I went up the river in a rusty canoe / what do you think I saw? / All manner of wriggling creeping things / freed up by the thaw."
  14. Jungian archetypes converted to character archetypes, law / chaos alignment variants.
  15. Character attributes based on the ancient Egyptian soul
    1. khat (physical body)
    2. k / ka (vital essence)
    3. jb / ib (heart; emotion, thought, will)
    4. b / ba  (personality, character)
    5. swt (shadow; secrets and hidden things)
    6. rn /ren (name)
    7. hw (intelligence and wisdom)
  16. Mechanic: orc-as disease, half-orc as infection
  17. Wizarding graduation regalia - highly symbolic, easy identification of specialization.
  18. The Alliance of 9 Worlds, formed 2192/2487
  19. The Dolorous Guard (Bill Norman, the Doorman)
  20. The mad Train-God, chaos lord, carving paths of hideous portent along ley lines.
  21. Moth-men worship the sun, but cannot stand its gaze. they look west at dawn before retreating to their caves.
  22. They came to worship the great and ancient beasts frozen in amber there...
  23. Goddess with blue skin, cloud hair, rust lips
  24. Vampires are anaerobic transhumans, used as the vanguard of colonization attempts.
  25. Meeting of posthuman seedship-derived species on a neutral space station.
  26. A sort of otherspace in the Pacific, fantastic islands impossible to reach through mundane navigation.
  27. As above, but in a warm, inland sea in the center of Antarctica.
  28. Asymmetrical long-war gives rise to elaborate and strict codes of conduct & courtesy.
  29. Typical grey saucer-aliens arrive after WW2, give human beings superpowers, it's actually a ploy to aid in their reproductive cycle.
  30. Grimdark low-magic little ice age euro-fantasy gives way to warm, colorful new age under the emergence of new gods. PCs were in stasis while the change occurred (Medusa is probable)
  31. White cloaks, black faces. Masks?
  32. "Will cast spells for food" - wizarding job market collapsed.
  33. What's In the Black Sarcophagus Dug Up From Underneath Corpathium / Vornheim / the Yellow City, etc?
    1. Actual literal Alexander the Pretty Okay
    2. Flamboyant, impossibly ripped vampire
    3. Oozing, billowing, tarry smoke cloud, animated
    4. Three skeletons and red goo
    5. Legendary monkey-king
    6. Barnacle-encrusted skeleton with a sword (cursed)
    7. Mummified giraffe with no bones
    8. Dodecacephalon, hibernating
    9. A strairway down
    10. ???
  34. Ocean world, tidally locked, city in eye of perpetual dayside hyper-cane
  35. Mandragora - man-dragon - mandrake
  36. LG = constructive, CG = corrective, LE = exploitative, CE = destructive

The Capitalism Monster

As adult or older dragon. Cannot fly, cannot move without great effort. Long sinuous neck, head like a bug-eyed reptilian vulture. Excessive corpulence provides protection instead of scales. Wallows in pool of knee-to-waist deep effluvia. Can bite at a distance due to neck, can claw and those close by, breath weapon shit-slurry containing the half-digested remains of artists and laborers. They gather weak-willed minions to their payroll by the horde.

Eats treasure and corpses. You get XP and schlorb when you feed it. Schlorb can...
  • be used as money (inflation means it's only taken by the gallon)
  • be used as food (barely nourishing, tastes just unpleasant enough that you'll swallow it)
  • restore health (not as effective as medical care or rest)
  • be used as a source of light and heat (burns dirty and inefficiently)
Schlorb is thick, oily, adipose-yellow in color, and mildly carcinogenic.

Items that would be used instead of schlorb  are rare to the point of treasure in regions where Capitalism Monsters have taken root.
