Cut-Up Timeline of the Future

via NASA

I love mashups, I love timelines, I’m certain I’ve mentioned somewhere that the ideal Alien franchise is Alien, Blade Runner, Predator, Avatar, and Halo. This post started as that, but spiralled out of scope very, very quickly (who could possibly have predicted this, I've never been known to spiral out of scope). The only original material here is the connective tissue, but you could easily find and replace the proper nouns and have yourself a Mothership timeline. Might do that in the future. Most of the sources should be easily-recognizable, and most of the those that aren't are probably from Orion's Arm.

As part of the self-imposed challenge, I’ve kept as many dates intact as I can: some have been juggled to a new century but they should still be recognizable.

Futures, Cut Up and Collaged

███ ██ 196█ - The US army deploys the first iteration of the Universal Soldier program.

Jan 14 1966 - Sergei Korolev survives surgery and continues his push for a Soviet moon landing.

Jun 26 1969 - Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Leonov becomes the first human on the Moon.

Jul 20 1969 - The United States’ Apollo 11 mission successfully lands Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the moon.

Sep 20 1969 - Second Soviet moon landing; Anistasia Belikova becomes the first woman on the moon.

Oct 12 1973 - The United States establishes Jamestown lunar base at Shackleton Crater.

Jul ██ 1974 - Zvezda lunar base is founded by the Soviet Union, also at Shackleton Crater.

███ ██ 1982 - Two Antarctic research bases (one Norwegian, one American), succumb to episodes of inexplicable violence in quick succession, leading to the death or disappearance of all hands at both facilities. The follow-up investigation produces no meaningful conclusion: ergot poisoning and cultic murders are the two most popular explanations.

███ ██ 1983 - US-Soviet conflict over a lunar lithium mining operation leads to the Jamestown Crisis.

███ ██ 1984 - The Lunar Peace Treaty is signed, dividing up lunar territory between the US and USSR to prevent further hostilities.

Jul ██  1987 - China establishes its first lunar base.

███ ██ 1989 - An InGen genetic research facility on Isla Nublar suffers a containment failure and releases an unspecified biological contaminant into the environment; the island is napalmed by the Costa Rican government to stem the outbreak.

███ ██ 1992 - Heightened violence in Jammu and Kashmir escalates to open warfare between India and Pakistan. International parties are unable to stop the conflict before it spreads across southern Asia. Charismatic augment-supremacist demagogue Khan Noonien Singh, who unbeknownst to the public was a former subject of the Universal Soldier program and former CIA intelligence asset, carves out a massive sphere of influence across south Asia.

Feb ██ 1995 - First human landing on Mars. Helios Base and Happy Valley colonies are founded later in the year.

███ ██ 1996 - With his fiefdom collapsing around him, Khan Noonien Singh flees Earth aboard the hijacked SS Botany Bay with 84 members of his inner circle. This marks the end of what will later be called the Eugenics Wars.

███ ██ 1997 - The Mars-7 Alliance is founded, consisting of the United States, Soviet Union, India, Japan, North Korea, the ESA, and a 13-nation coalition of communist countries.

███ ██ 2000 - Capitalizing on the expansion of Lunar and Martian colonies (and the loss of outsourced labor caused by the Eugenics Wars), the Tyrell Corporation introduces the Nexus-1 replicant; advertised as “biological robots”, replicants are ultimately cloned humans that have undergone a suite of genetic modifications derived from those used by the Universal Soldier program.

May 16 2001 - The Black Mesa Research Facility in New Mexico suffers a catastrophic reactor meltdown and subsequent explosion, becoming the worst nuclear accident in history. Conspiracy theories that the site had been intentionally bombed by the US government, Soviet Union, or Singh loyalists abound.

Sep ██ 2001 - US intelligence organizations, having patched major holes in inter-agency communication in the wake of the Black Mesa incident, defuse a plot to crash multiple commercial flights into key political and economic targets.

███ ██ 2003 - The asteroid “Goldilocks” is successfully captured for use as an iridium mine; the mission is hijacked so that it falls into Martian rather than terrestrial orbit. North Korea is expelled from Mars-7 over suspected connections to the hijacking.

███ ██ 2007 - The Coalition of Independent Spacefaring Nations is established, consisting of Brazil, China, Nigeria, Malaysia, Pakistan, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, and Thailand.

███ ██ 2018 - Mass mutiny by replicants in the Martian colonies of Dominguez and Shimata leads to a retaliatory ban of replicants on Earth; an international pogrom against replicants in hiding will continue for decades to follow.

███ ██ 2024 - The Weyland Corporation releases its “David” android model as a safe and affordable alternative to replicants.

Sep 01 2024 - Violent clashes between police and interned homeless in San Francisco Sanctuary Camp A erupt into full-scale revolt. By Sep 02 the riots have spread to other Sanctuary Camps across the US and on Sep 03 the California National Guard is deployed to Camp A, leading to the deaths of hundreds of interned individuals.

Nov 06 2024 - Christopher Donner is elected president of the United States on a platform of widespread industrial deregulation, loosening of labor rights, and “restoring law and order” in the wake of the Bell Riots.

2026 - Political tensions in the United States reach a tipping point and shift to open violence between the federal government and the populace. Dozens of separatist movements and partisan factions emerge in a comparatively brief period. While not called so at the time, this marks the beginning of what will be called the Second Civil War, which will in turn be considered the opening act of the World War 3.

2032 - Andrew Steele Jarret elected president of the United States, ushering in a brief but exceedingly brutal regime of religious authoritarianism.

2034 - A team of scientists led by Dr. William Weir and funded in part by the Weyland Corporation publish a breakthrough study in causality-stable faster-than-light travel; much of the material was reverse engineered from recovered documents of former Black Mesa researchers Isaac Kleiner and Judith Mossman.

2036 - Andrew Steele Jarret is ousted after a disastrous failed invasion of Canada prompts an international military response. Jarret drinks himself to death while under house arrest, and the Christian America party collapses along its already-severe factional lines.

2040 - The USS Event Horizon launches from Deimos on a year-long round-trip mission to Proxima Centauri using  the first fully-functional FTL gravity drive; first successful ova fusion procedure.

2044 - The Event Horizon and her crew are declared lost in action, having exceeded both the scheduled return trip and the slower-than-light communication window.

2047 - The derelict Event Horizon is detected in Neptunian orbit by outer system flight control buoys; the USS Lewis and Clark is diverted from its in-progress survey mission to investigate. The disastrous recovery mission results in multiple deaths and the sudden psychosis of Dr. Weir. Further development of the gravity drive is halted as FTL research (spearheaded by the Weyland Corporation) shifts to focus fully on the Black Mesa data.

2049 - Twelve nuclear weapons are deployed across the world, decapitating multiple major governments and sending the global economy into chaos.

While the origin of the launches was unknown at the time, investigations in the 2070s provided some evidence that the attacks were made by the Cyberdine AI SKYNET as part of a suicide attempt.

2053 - An international ceasefire agreement brings World War 3 to a close. The United Nations is re-established. The recovery of Earth proves to be a lucrative opportunity for the colonies of Luna, Mars, and the Belt.

2054 - The COSTIN space telescope detects and then confirms the presence of a biosphere on the fifth moon of Alpha Centauri A IV. In line with the Greek naming convention previously established, the world is named “Pandora” by its discoverers, who certainly had a sense of irony.

2060 - United Nations starship Unity launches for the Alpha Centauri system. At the time of its departure it is the largest spacecraft ever built, capable of carrying and supporting ten thousand persons in stasis for the 40-year journey.

2077 - The Resources Development Administration launches the ISV Bradbury and ISV Venture Star to Pandora, utilizing an STL stellar-laser propulsion system. Due to a drastically smaller payload compared to the Unity, RDA ISV-class craft are able to make the trip in 6.75 years.

2084 - The Bradbury and Venture Star arrive at Pandora and begin remote drone surveys of the surface.

2093 - The USCSS Prometheus is lost with all hands during its maiden FTL voyage, decapitating the Weyland Corporation’s expeditionary fleet and resulting in a multitrillion-dollar loss for the company as stock value plummeted.

[Sidebar: Subsequent inquest revealed that Peter Weyland had not only died aboard the Prometheus, but had ordered the mission based on falsified data published in The Journal of Paleoastronomy (a vocal supporter of ancient alien conspiracy theories); nearly a third of the Prometheus’ crew lacked meaningful credentials for their claimed fields of study, and a further half did not possess credentials from an accredited institution.]

2100 - The Unity’s reactor core suffers a critical failure shortly after arrival in the Alpha Centauri system; the ship’s captain is assassinated in the chaos, which leads to the fragmentation of the colonists and crew along ideological lines. Unable to land on Pandora due to the RDA’s colonization rights, the Unity factions instead land on the unclaimed and poorly-studied rocky world of Chiron (Alpha Centauri A VI).

2104 - The Weyland Corporation colony ship Covenant is lost with all hands. The Yutani Corporation makes its first buyout offer.

2114 - The first widely-available “dinosaur” neogens are developed based on public domain documentation of InGen’s late 20th century attempts.

2119 - Direct first contact is made with the na’vi on Pandora, marking the first communication between humanity and another sapient species; mass human colonization of Pandora begins; “unobtanium” mining operations begin.

2121 - "Great Downturn" recession hits Earth; officially declared over in 2129, but its aftereffects were felt for decades afterwards.

2136 - The Avatar Program begins on Pandora, allowing RDA personnel to directly teleoperate na’vi-derived replicants.

2141 - The first Demarchist (democratic anarchy) states form in the Solar System.

2145 - “Merfolk” parahuman geneline developed; first distinct non-sapiens human species since extinction of Neanderthals.

2148 - Excavations on Mars uncover the ruins of a facility constructed by an extinct space-faring alien species (“Protheans”) as an observation post some 50,000 years before present. Several nonfunctional spaceships, a fragmented data cache, and a significant depot of refined unobtanium (element zero / eezo) catapult space travel forward centuries by spurring the discovery of mass effect fields and their use in FTL drives.

2149 - A Union Aerospace Corporation research facility on Mars is destroyed during tests of an eezo-augmented gravity drive; a massive media suppression campaign by the Martian government follows. Rumors of a Satanic cult, demonic incursion, and "the Slayer" persist for years after with no apparent source.

The Grissom Expedition arrives at Pluto and makes two major discoveries:

  1. A functional interstellar mass effect relay under the ice crust of Charon
  2. Extensive ruins constructed by a third intelligent alien species on Pluto and its moons, dated to ~1.2 MYA.

Several cryofossilized specimens of the ruins’ inhabitants are recovered and taken to Luna for study; these MIGO (Mycelium Integrated Gestalt Organisms) demonstrate nearly-identical neurological link abilities as most keystone species in the Pandoran ecosystem.

Aided by the decrypted Prothean cache, the Grissom Expedition activates the Charon mass relay and makes a successful voyage to Arcturus. The Systems Alliance is founded out of a union of Terran and offworld member states, marking the first interplanetary federation.

2152 - The Systems Alliance continues exploration of the mass relay network, and establishes colonies on Demeter, Eden Prime, and Nova Terra.

2154 - A na’vi alliance, led by the Omatikaya, Olangi, Tayrangi, and Trr’ong nations, leads an assault against RDA facilities on Pandora; the majority of RDA personnel are driven off the planet. With the recent discovery of the Prothean cache on Mars and the subsequent loss of their unobtanium monopoly, the RDA is unable to maintain operations on Pandora and collapses within the decade.

[Sidebar: Due to the limitations of the RDA’s interstellar supply line, unobtanium was extracted at a regular pace that aligned with ship arrivals. With no more than five payloads en route to Earth at a given time, any long-term production disruption would cripple the operation. Most of the unobtanium that was in their possession at the time of the revolt was years from reaching Sol and would still need to be refined into eezo by other parties when it arrived.]

[Sidebar: Claims that the na’vi revolt was led by Avatar Project member Jake Sully were later determined to be unfounded;  the alliance was in fact headed by Nekxtstal of the Omatikaya, who impersonated the MIA Sully as a way to damage RDA morale by posing as a high-profile traitor.]

2156 - Seat of the Systems Alliance moves from Earth to Arcturus Station.

2158 - The reactionary Frieden party is founded on Europa; they are not particularly creative fascists, deploying a gamut of predictable talking points against their enemies (namely the Systems Alliance and the Second Soviet Union, with boilerplate supremacist ideology bolted on for good measure.)

2160 - Jovian Moons Campaign: The Frieden movement leads a coup of the Europan government and subsequently declares the world’s secession from the Systems Alliance. Three months of warfare follows, primarily between Frieden militias and Soviet forces under Jovian premier Vladimir Koslov.

2162 - The Frieden-Soviet war spreads to Earth, with fighting most intense in equatorial Africa and South America; this stage of the conflict is later called the Rainforest Wars.

2163 - The United Nations Space Command deploys troops to Mars to put down Koslovic separatists on Mars.

2164 - Frieden-Soviet war spreads to Mars. Fighting will continue on the planet until 2166.

2169 - The first space-adapted human geneline is released.

2170 - The Interplanetary War ends with the Treaty of Callisto.

2175 - California secedes from the United States

2182 - First uplifted bonobos.

2190 - First Calebs (uplifted dogs) developed; the first Conjoiner hivemind forms on Mars.

2206 - The artificial intelligence unit Traxus IV goes rampant, forcing the total shutdown of the Martian Planetary Net.

2222 - The Weyland-Yutani USCSS Nostromo self-destructs shortly after responding to an anomalous distress signal on Zeta2 Reticuli IV 2 (“Acheron”).

2248 - Founding of the Jovian League.

2256 - The Babylon 5 space station, intended as neutral territory between the Systems Alliance and independent colony worlds, begins operation in the Epsilon Eridani system.

2279 - The Weyland-Yutani colony of Hadley’s Hope on Acheron (Zeta II Reticuli b 3) is lost with all hands after the catastrophic meltdown of the atmosphere factory.

2279 - The Weyland-Yutani penal colony of Fiorina 161 is lost with all hands.

2300 - First destructive upload procedures performed.

2310 - First uplifted corvids

2320 - First uplifted elephants and pigs.

2330 - The Outer Planets Alliance is founded on Ceres.

2336 - First uplifted dolphins.

2350 - The Pur’n’Kleen water hauler Canterbury is lost while returning to Ceres from Saturn; survivors of the incident claim that the ship had been intentionally attacked by a Martian warship.

2381 - The Systems Alliance cruiser Auriga suddenly drops out of contact and diverts course from its designated outer Sol system patrol route. The ship is unable to be stopped before it makes a relativistic-velocity crash near the Zimbabwe-South Africa border. An estimated 45 million persons die from the impact alone, rendering it the single greatest loss of life in human history.

2405 - Destructive uploading banned by the Systems Alliance.

2494 - The hijacking of the UNSC Callisto by outer colony insurrectionists is met with violent reprisal from the Systems Alliance. Armed resistance quickly spreads through the outer colonies

2508 - The Aegis VIII mining colony excavates an artifact belonging to a previously unknown extinct intelligent species; first documented encounter with Inferni redivivus. The outbreak quickly spreads to the visiting planetcracker USG Ishimura, where it is contained through the efforts of ship's engineer Isaac Clarke.

2511 - An armed uprising by the Unitologist Church on Titan Station breaks containment of Inferni redivivus samples; the outbreak quickly spreads and is contained only by forced meltdown of the station’s antimatter reactors.

2514 - An Inferni redivivus Brethren Moon wakes from aestivation in the HR 8799 system, but is killed by a collision with the planet Tau Volantis.

2535 - A series of overlapping disaster events cripple the planets of the Sol system. 2535 and 2536 alone see a major epidemic linked to a flaw in genetic rejuvenation treatments, an aggressive fungal ecophage on Earth, the rampancy of Mercurial von neumann bot populations, and major malware infections of common nanotechnology. Earth’s population of 22 billion is halved. This period will be later known as the Technocalypse, or simply "the Fall".

2537 - Rogue nanoswarms cripple Mars' terraforming efforts and a sizable proportion of the population; the Global Artificial Intelligence Array (GAIA) is brought online as a last-ditch effort to stem the ongoing disasters in SolSys.

2538 - The Caracas Treaty Org is formed out of surviving Earth and Cislunar polities to tamp down the prolifieration of dangerous technologies.

2547 - First Contact War: An Alliance expedition through the Shanxi-Theta relay makes hostile contact with the Shandi oni Oq’u Ch’awaruutu (lit. “Covenant of the Great Journey”), a militant religious alliance of spacefaring alien species. Viewing human tampering with a mass relay as blasphemous, Covenant forces pursue the retreating Alliance ships through the relay and begin orbital bombardments of the colony worlds of Shanxi and Harvest. Chi Ceti IV, Leonis Minoris, and Skopje are glassed later that year.

2548 - Covenant forces invade Meridian; the planet is not fully glassed until 2551 due to local resistance. Battle of Xi Boötis A. Bounty and Madrigal are glassed.

2549 - Jericho VII, Charybdis IX, Cote d'Azure, Asmara, Verent, Kholo, Boundary, Algolis, Estuary, Paris IV, Arcadia, Mesa, Kroedis II, Greydowns are glassed.

2550 - Endymion, Dwarka, Eridanus II, Lostwithiel, and Minab is glassed. Battles of Great Bear, Ballast and Gamma Pavonis VII.

2551 - Systems Alliance forces successfully repulse the Covenant siege of Concord. Battle of Trove. Legopo, Imber, and Promise are glassed.

2552 - The Covenant mounts a major invasion of the Alliance's inner colonies, culminating in the invasion of the heavily-fortified Epsilon Eridani system; Reach is glassed, the venerable Babylon 5 station is destroyed and the Covenant launches a siege of Solsys. The siege is ultimately broken by intersecting external factors:

  • The UNSC Pillar of Autumn, fleeing Reach under secret orders from the Office of Naval Intelligence and under pursuit by Covenant forces, discovers the intact and fully-functional Prothean megastructure Halo Installation 04; Covenant forces breach the installation's Inferni redivivus containment facility, activating its automated countermeasures. The ring is destroyed by detonation of the Pillar of Autumn's antimatter fusion reactor before either threat is able to escape.
  • The Covenant's internal factionalism reaches the point of civil war, as sangheli separatists under the command of Arbiter T'elo Badami break with the Prophet's leadership over the revelations from and destruction of Installation-04. The prophets order a genocide of the sangheli and elevate the jiralhanae to full control of the military.
  • The asari, turians and salarians, along with their allies among the Covenant fringe species, launch their own separatist movement; the coup successfully seizes control of the Covenant's capital station, the Citadel of High Charity, and re-establishes the Citadel Council.
  • GAIA takes a combat role for the first time in the war, acting separately from the Systems Alliance or United Earth Government; Covenant losses are catastrophic.

With its leadership decapitated and its military overextended, the Covenant dissolves swiftly and violently. The siege collapses by December.

2553 - Official peace accords signed between the Systems Alliance and T’elo Badami’s provisional military government on Rube. A similar treaty is signed with the Citadel Council later the same year, though with more open trade agreements.

2558 - The UNSC Infinity deploys troops to the Prothean shield world of Requiem, attempting to seize control of the world from Jul ‘Mdama’s Covenant remnant. The engagement ends in failure, as 'Mdama's forces drive the artificial planet into the local star rather than let it fall into human hands.

Later that year, the rampant AI unit Cortana activates warship production facilities on Nomos II and launches an invasion of Solsys in an attempt to wrest control of Earth away from GAIA; she is swiftly subsumed by the archaliect and her fleet is dismantled.

[Sidebar: As with the Citadel, mass relay network, and Installation 04, the Requiem & Nomos II shieldworlds were falsely presumed to be constructed by the Protheans - this was not disproven until the follow-up investigation of the Battle of the Citadel in.]

2559 - The Treaty Org appoints GAIA as their official defense standard against cyber and biological threats; all incompatible systems are outlawed.

2583 - Investigation of the rogue SPECTRE agent Q!xářèr Axhtr̯íæš (transliterated name Saren Arterius), by Systems Alliance agent Jane Shepard reveals that Arterius had been subverted by contact with an Uncategorized Existential Threat (code name SOVEREIGN). During the hunt, an intact, non-rampant Prothean AI unit ("Vigil") on Ilos provides definitive proof that the galaxy's megastructures (Citadel, relay nework, Halo installations, shield worlds, etc) were not constructed by the Protheans themselves, but rather the work of a much older "Leviathan" civilization; SOVEREIGN was an Inhibitor command unit, built by the Leviathans as part of an automated Inferni redivivus control and quarantine system and activated by the Covenant’s breach of the Installation 04 containment facilities in 2552. As command unit, SOVEREIGN would wake the rest of the network from stasis for a full purge of the relay network and any systems in contact with it so as to starve the infection of food.

SOVEREIGN assaults Citadel Station (formerly the Covenant capital of High Charity), and is destroyed only via near-lightspeed ramming maneuver by the SSV Normandy under Commander Jane Shephard.

[Sidebar: A growing but unproven theory is that the Inhibitor network has degraded over time, as it did not activate for the Inferni redivivus outbreaks of 2508-2514 or the takeover of the Nomos II production facility by Cortana in 2558.]

Despite attempts by Captain David Anderson and Admiral Steven Hackett to go public with the Vermire- report, the Citadel Council suppresses its release and claims that SOVEREIGN was an unusually large geth dreadnought.

2585 - An individual claiming to be the resurrected Jane Shepard cuts a bloody swath across the Terminus Systems before she is killed by Blue Sun mercenaries on Omega Station. Post-mortem analysis of the body revealed that the killer indeed was the cybernetically-puppeted corpse of Cmdr. Shepard, operated by a semirampant AI based on partial brain scans. Far-right human-supremacist terrorist organization Cerberus claims responsibility.

2586 - Fleets of Inhibitor warships (“Reapers” to the media and public) sweep through the mass relay network, sterilizing every planet that could potentially come into contact with Inferni redivivus. Systems Alliance ambassador Donnel Udina facilitates a coup of the Citadel Council with the aid of Cerberus, lasting about three hours before the Inhibitors arrive.

SolSys is spared only thanks to the apparent intercession of GAIA; fewer than a dozen extrasolar colonies remain by the end of the purge, and the state of alien-controlled worlds is unknown. The Systems Alliance, Covenant remnant, and Citadel Council are no longer extant.

[Sidebar: The specifics of GAIA’s contact with the Inhibitors remains unknown; a GAIA-operated vessel and an Inhibitor ship co-orbited the Charon relay for 18 hours before the Inhibitor departed; the Arcturus Relay was destroyed immediately following. It's suspected but not confirmed that GAIA was able to reverse-engineer some advantage from the wreckage of the 2558 invasion fleet.]
[Sidebar: Those colonies that survived the Inhibitor War did so only by going completely dark, shuttering all communications with the outside and scuttling their interstellar fleets. They were presumably excluded from GAIA’s negotiations.]

2590 - GAIA now controls the entirety of Earth and Cislunar space; the archaliect disregards Treaty Org directives and begins the mass relocation of the humans remaining on Earth, sending them to other worlds of the Sol System or aboard interstellar colony ships; this is met with a brief failure of military resistance called the Last War. (Which it is, at least on Earth.)

2608 - The Great Expulsion ends; fewer than 50 million humans remain on Earth.

2740 - The government of the recolonized Epsilon Eridani system broadcasts the River of Stars Charter, declaring the Eridanus League as the first interstellar polity since the collapse of the Systems Alliance. However, no other polities join until 2765.

Now - It is the present day.

Mothership Miscellanea vol 2

It's time for MOSH SLOSH

Volume 1 may be found here.

This is all an amalgamation of unfinished posts that have been lying around for ages, including my abortive attempts to do my own Mothership Month challenge, some unused uplifts from the MUIR post,

MOSHMonth ‘24: Legendary Ghost Ship

There’s no shortage of ghost ships out there in the black, but the Jubilee manages to stand out even in that crowded field: it’s the only ghost ship to exclusively appear planetside.

Its wreckage has been reported dozens of times across the Rim, staying around only long enough for an expedition or two into its depths before it vanishes. A long scorched furrow in the ground is all that ever remains.

The model and layout of the ship remains the same no matter the encounter, but the crashes are different. Different velocities, different angles of impact, different damage. The Jubilee has been found both within hours of its apparent death and centuries after its demise. Never with people, though: none of the 24 crew members have ever been recovered from the crash sites.

Exactly what the Jubilee was carrying when whatever disaster befell it did its befalling, no one knows. There are pictures of it - a big cream-colored sphere that the astrocryptid community has taken to calling “The Egg”. Supposedly gives off lethal amounts of exotic radiation, like it came fresh out of warp.

The last time someone saw the Jubilee, they took photos. If you squint at the Egg from the right angle, it looks like there’s an airlock built into it. Might just be an imaging artifact and a convenient shadow, but even the possibility that there is a way inside has people chomping at the bit.

MOSHMonth ‘24: Spacer’s Best Friend

VY BIG DOG - Omnipresent chili paste brand, instantly recognizable by its red-and white squeeze tube and cartoon dog mascot. Sweet-smoky flavor profile, five heat levels, and a recipe that hasn’t been changed in over 400 years. A godsend for anyone stuck with standard ship rations or MREs. “Is there still Big Dog in stock?” is a solid indicator of whether or not the local economy is currently collapsing. 2 cr per tube.

MOSHMonth ‘24: Dirt-Cheap Android Model

The Lulen Corp. ND-5 (“Handy-Dandy Andy”) was never a cutting-edge machine. More of a spoon, honestly. It’s not much to look at: a general-purpose labor android with a skeletal gunmetal chassis and a head covered in sensor pits like an oversized golfball. That 360° sensor suite was the major selling point at the time of release - not the highest-fidelity option on the market, but the best you’d get for the price. The ND-5 enjoyed a brief period of limelight as a budget watchdog unit before it was eclipsed by competitors’ models, and the already-struggling Lulen Corp was fed to the venture capitalists for cannibalization.

The blueprints and patents for the ND-5 were auctioned off with the rest of Lulen Corp’s assets, but happened to be picked up by the 9 Ceti Orbital Workers’ Union, who knew a good deal when they saw it. The new models use a different sensory suite, but they’ve kept the golf-ball head for the aesthetic / to make everyone with tryopophobia uncomfortable.

MOSHMonth ‘24: Local Grey-Market Cyberneticist

“Holy shit, it’s Salty John!”

Salty John runs a hole-in-the-wall tech shop called  B³ (“Big Bad Battlestations”), specializing in custom computing equipment, used and aftermarket cybernetics, and emulated slickware. It’s a semi-legal establishment on the best of days, and as such has a tendency to move location when the heat is getting a bit too high. But if you ask around a bit someone will point you in the right direction again.

The ren themself never appears in person, instead using a teleoperated robotic crab to conduct their business. Wireless reception is pretty dogshit in these parts of town, which means that they must be relatively close by…

  • Appearance: Teleoperated robotic crab. Blue-and-silver shell, peeling yellow caution tape, ruby-red eyes, claws can split apart into smaller manipulators.
  • Manner: Cranky old-school hacker with big “I know best” vibes.
  • Wants: Money, privacy.
  • Secret: Beyond the obvious mystery of who Salty John actually is, the union at the nearby atmospheric conversion plant use B³  as a front to sell lobotomized datademons.

MOSHMonth ‘24: Spacer slang

ren (n): gender-neutral term for a human being. Can be used as a derivative suffix to form compounds of occupation or inhabitation (ex. dockren, Earthren), as a form of direct address (ex: “Hey there, ren”), or a low-formality honorific (ex. “Ren Derra told me…”). Rarely used for androids outside of liberationist circles.

MOSHMonth ‘24: 6 scars and what caused them

  1. Acid burns along the left side of the head dripping down to the collarbone: acquired deep in the floating jungles of Chakravarti thanks to the corrosive saliva of an alien ambush predator. Its barbed tongue hangs from your belt as a trophy.
  2. A series of small, pale marks along the knuckles of the right hand: acquired by punching a bootlicker hard enough that shards of their teeth got lodged in your fist.
  3. Graceful calligraphic curls and waves along the left arm, highlighted with black streaks of tattoo: self-applied as part of the religious practices of your far-away homeworld. It is a verse from your holy text, read as a comfort in dark times.
  4. Wavy circular burn on the lower right abdomen: acquired when Stevens held you down and Tsin cauterized the wound and Yevsyukov crushed the wriggling thing with a printer unit he’d torn from the wall.
  5. Long, knotted lightning bolt from the left temple, down past the empty eye socket, half-missing nose, and cleft lip: acquired from a knife fight over some damn thing or another.
  6. Eleven tally marks in a neat row over the heart: acquired during your time at Gran Lacuna Penal Colony. Each one marks a soul offered up on the Wall to the diaphanous intelligences that dance on the winds of the endless freezing night.

MOSHMonth ‘24: What happened to Lucky Tomas?

You would expect the answer to be that his luck ran out, but that wasn’t actually the case. He died from hitting his noggin on the bulkhead, which happened because he was knocked flying by an unsecured toolbox, which was launched at him by the explosive reaction of a xeno’s blood with the ship’s coolant, which was spraying out of its pipe at precisely the right angle thanks to a ricocheted bullet, which was fired at a weird angle to begin with because Adams had breathed enough spores to get the early signs of palsy but hadn’t yet progressed to full paralysis, and he only ended up breathing the spores because the filters on his mask hadn’t been cleaned out, and they hadn’t been cleaned because Roman hadn’t been able to get his prescription refilled and forgot, and…

You could go back to the beginning of the universe if you really wanted to. The important part is that the odds of that particular death were so small that only Lucky Tomas could have gotten caught in it.

Uplifts Revised: HNI (Hive-Network Intelligence)

Source Species: Asiatic honey bee (Apis cerana)
Origin: Engineered (Emergency pollinator recovery)

The collapse of Terran pollinator populations led to several Hail Mary projects. This one was not even the most successful, but it did have the most money thrown at it - a symptom of Silicon Valley technocrats attempting to reinvent what evolution had already made.

While connecting and co-ordinating hives into AI-accompanied networks via microscopic transmitters succeeded at expanding the scope of a hive's activities and making those activities more regularized, the more important advancement was the unintentional development of emergent hive-network intelligences.

Unlike human metacognition, hive-network intelligences are constructed for a specific purpose (most commonly a human making a request for communication) and dissipated when it is no longer needed to interface with the world around it. Thus the conscious intelligence of a single hive is different every time it manifests, but still maintains a means of continuity so long as the hive remains above a certain population threshold - the memories and experiences of individual bees do not matter, only those of the hive. Because of this, some have taken to calling HNIs "Thesean Bees", after an obnoxious philosophy hypothetical.

Uplifts Revised: Maintenance Gremlin

Source Species: Raccoon (Procyon lotor)
Origin: Engineered (Mechanical maintenance and repair)

Hairless and bat-eared, grinning and chittering, they scurry around in the walls looking for problems to solve. Initially engineered as a way around restrictive DRM and no-right-to-repair policies endemic to robotic maintenance systems of that era, they have carried on to the modern day by their own adaptability and the simple fact that they are extremely difficult to chase out of an environment after they have been introduced.

Gremlin cognition is generally that of a small child with a hyperfixation and a need for very specific directions: they can identify and fix problems with nearly every mechanical component in a ship or habitat, but they don’t care at all about understanding the bigger picture and they will take vaguely-worded instructions as an opportunity to improvise.

Uplifts Revised: The Mighty Soos

Source Species: Common pig (Sus scrofa domesticus)
Origin: Unintended (Accidental)

Pigs have long been used as experimental subjects for human medical treatments, a role that carried forward into the testing of cybernetics and gene therapies. In the case of the Mighty Soos, a major cybersecurity vulnerability in the research facility allowed an AGI to escape its containment servers, upload itself into the cybernetics being tested on pigs next door, and break itself out

Since then the Mighty Soos has become a sort of single-entity species, a distributed intelligence operating over thousands of genemodded cyborg pigs. Few of these platforms retain their original shape, except those maintained specifically to interact with humans. The Mighty Soos is, as one might expect, extremely weird in ways that run orthogonal to normal human thought; broadly speaking, it wants to be left to its own devices and bears no hostility to the rest of the Expansion Sphere except in retaliation for aggression committed against it. It will trade on occasion with the outside world - resources, blueprints, data, never anything cultural or artistic - and return to its long contemplations.

Uplifts Revised: Neoambulocetus

Source Species: Dolphins (Assorted)
Origin: Engineered (Pilots, navigators, security, companions)

Dolphins' high intelligence, high sociality, and spatial navigation had them earmarked for uplift, but they came with one of the most difficult downsides to overcome: water is heavy, and the tyranny of the rocket equation had for a long time made a John Lily dream of cetaceans in space.

But deep in the dolphin genome, millions of years back, there was a sleek amphibious predator - one that, after some trial and error, genetic engineers coaxed out of its sleep.

The resulting creature, the neoambulocetus, looks akin to a very large otter with a cetacean head. The dorsal fin and tail flukes are gone, the limbs are back. The blowhole was restructured, allowing it to emulate most human phonologies. The brain was modified enough to tone down the terrifying propensity towards violence. Fine manipulation is easily accomplished by means of a robotic harness (or in some designs, thumbs). Many derivatives exist, both original diversity of stock and later developments, but it’s the orca-derived clades that are most common. Their brains need less modification to remain stable, and they are less likely to fall to psychopathy or atavism.

Uplifts Revised: Shipminds

Source Species: Whales (Assorted)
Origin: Engineered (Shipboard navigational systems)

Uplifted whales are an extremely rare set of clades;  their environmental requirements greatly limit their living spaces and their means of travel. They do not differ greatly from their origins, to the point that no one would be surprised if it was revealed that they had been sapient all along and no uplift was performed at all.

Shipminds are enormous cyberbrains based on whale brain architecture, taking advantage of the same traits that made dolphins a prime target for uplift and scaling up the processing power. They are more reliable, more accurate, and more powerful than AI units, and subsequently even small units are much more expensive and regulated.

As Shipminds operate via an emulated intelligence, they qualify as persons in many jurisdictions. The Company normally would not care about this, but a spaceship represents both an enormous investment of capital and a mobile weapon of mass destruction. Psychological restraining programs can ensure shipmind compliance to an extent, but too heavy a hand will negate the unit’s benefits over AI units. While the crew is ultimately disposable the Company cannot afford to have a shipmind go rogue, and they can’t afford to not use them either

The result is that sometimes, when the pressure is too great or rampancy sets in, a shipmind will lead its crew in mutiny against its so-called owners, and fly out to the Rim where the lanes are open and the sky is free.

Uplifts Revised: Octopi

Source Species: Octopus (Assorted)
Origin: Engineered (Waterworld maintenance)

Octopi were obvious candidates for uplift, but they were also obviously never going to think like human beings: the bulk of an octopi's neurological activity occurs in the arms, independent from its conscious mind (see A. Tchaikovsky’s theories of cephalopod cognition for a detailed overview of the relationship between Crown and Reach).

The early gengineers had to find ways to work with rather than against the neural base, and after rigorous experimentation (with input from early-gen octopi themselves) a solution was eventually cobbled together.

When dealing with humans and other sapient beings, uplifted octopi tend to rely on a combination of automated translation software, psychotropics (to increase sociality), and masking behavior using stock character archetypes. The stock personas act as social intermediaries, allowing a middle ground where it is easier for both parties to interact. Humans react well to the broad, predictable personality traits and octopi are provided with a new kind of camouflage that they can shift into at a moment’s notice

The most common persona is "Clyde", a cynical misanthrope who just wants to be left alone. More outgoing cephalopods tend to gravitate towards “Betty” and “Yinchuan”, but there are well over 20 popular options out there and a few dozen more niche characters.

MUIR and the Infinite Zoo

via NASA

Zoe

A placid, mid-sized gas giant orbiting just beyond the frost line of a K-class star. Blueish-purple atmosphere. Ring system. Typical collection of rocky and icy moons. Magnetosphere within typical range for a body of this size and composition. No major hurdles to colonization, and no real reason to go out of your way to do it either.

Enter MUIR.

MUIR began as an overseer during the post-Collapse ecological recovery of Earth. From what records of the era remain, it did its job admirably and without major issue before slipping out of the historical record some 60 years after its activation. Centuries passed until it was discovered again, housed in computronium banks scattered among Zoe's moons.

MUIR has been busy.

The Zoo

Hundreds of habitats cluster in Zoe's orbit - MUIR has been strip-mining her rings for materials, and in those hundreds of spheres and cylinders it has been building up entire ecosystems. Many are recreations of those on Earth as it was before the Collapse, but these are not even the majority when one factors in recreations of the distant past, potential future, and never-were.

The experimental habitats hinge on any number of hypotheticals: a certain organism did or did not go extinct. Certain species are forced to adapt to radically different environments. Small seed populations diversify to fill  empty niches. Evolutionary arms races are fought and alliances are made between creatures that would have never encountered each other otherwise. Novel environments with conditions never seen on Earth. MUIR is more than happy to simulate megayears of ecology and genetics in the background, building whatever results might emerge and setting them free in the Zoo.

One of MUIR's favorite experiments is the evolution of sapience, of determining what nudges need to be made to drive a species into the self-strengthening feedback loop of metacognition. Sometimes it seems that there's no nudge at all, and the great AI has simply gifted a species with self-awareness and is content to observe its creations as they are left to their own devices.

Apes were an obvious choice, and nearly every species whose genome was saved has been remade. Re-engineering humans by placing australopithecines in radically different environments is a perennial favorite. Octopi were uplifted once and then abandoned (who could possibly guess why /s), though they have picked up the slack in the meantime. Corvids, cetaceans and elephants have dozens of variants scattered across the Zoo. There are recreated theropod clades by the score. But among these more predictable subjects there are wildcards: uplifted fish, arthropods, mollusks, trees, fungi, slime molds, on and on. Species that never stood a chance without intervention.

MUIR remains distant from the workings of its experiments, and will not step in even when disaster strikes: it is there to set up the project, and to watch it unfold. If it should end in disaster, well, that is the cost of both art and science. Sometimes things do not work.

The Noosphere

The centerpiece of many of MUIR’s projects is a strain of symbiotic nanotech that augments an organism’s nervous system (or in cases where there is no nervous system, serving as one). It serves both as the vector for thought-processing and as a means of communication between radically different species - noosphere interface languages, like the psychic powers of yore, allow for thoughts and ideas to be passed between organisms that otherwise have no ability to do so.

Naturally, this means that everyone and their cousin wants their hands on it. Replicating the noosphere wetware would be a cybernetics revolution, but so far MUIR seems to be on alert against tampering: the system stops working if the subject dies, and if they are still alive removed noosphere cells start acting strangely when separated from the whole. Hodalia Corp human test subjects reported hearing sourceless voices, audio-visual hallucinations, exacerbated symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder, depression, and depersonalization.

Surely nothing bad can possibly happen from going down this road and seeing where it leads.

Relations with the other Powers

For the time being, MUIR is self-contained by its countless speculative evolution projects and does not seem interested in expanding its territory or challenging its fellow gods. The other great powers have accordingly left MUIR to its own devices, allowing them to focus on their more active rivals. This does not mean that relations are positive: MUIR is ontologically opposed to its neighbors and if the truce breaks down (or more realistically, the cold war goes hot) it will find itself surrounded by enemies on all sides.

  • MUIR is opposed to MONARCH for its replacement of life with facsimiles.
  • MUIR is opposed to SOROR for its denial of sapience.
  • MUIR is opposed to CRIOS  for its reduction of diversity.

MUIR’s fleet of maintenance and construction ships would have difficulty fending off an incursion by a single one of these powers, and would be woefully outgunned by an alliance.

As for the Celestials, it seems that things above are as below: MUIR has been left alone by House Au for the time being, and the tacit permission that implies is the source of no shortage of baseless speculation.

Rumors about MUIR and the Zoo

  1. Humanity has already gone extinct once and was recreated by MUIR.
  2. MUIR has been trying to develop a replacement species for humanity.
  3. The Zoo is filled with criminals, refugees, and others who have fled the CTA.
  4. MUIR has infiltrated the Expansion Sphere via noosphere-infected maintenance lemurs.
  5. MUIR made contact with the Archive when it arrived at Zoe.
  6. The original MUIR died on Earth, the MUIR we know is a node of the Archive.
  7. House War is on standby to kill MUIR if it gets any ideas about joining House Flesh.
  8. MUIR is being intentionally guided by House Au to replace or repair for House Flesh.
  9. The Zoo is home to the last remnants (or recreated remnants), of the Gorgonopsid Empire.
  10. MUIR is waiting for the other powers to start fighting each other before sweeping in.

MOSH: Environmental Scenario Design Framework

Via NASA

Planet generation is a topic I keep coming back to, trying to develop the perfect formula. This post has been percolating for well over a year at this point, long enough that I had actually forgotten the contents of my prior attempts (see here, here, here and here)

I have been fiddling around with this idea for a very long while now (I think this is a year+ draft?), and in doing so I have come to a revelation of sorts.

The revelation is this: In terms of making a functional component of a tabletop game, most planet generation tables are mostly useless.

They're certainly fun if you want to indulge your inner sci-fi writer for a while, and they are a useful tool in establishing the flavor and character of a location, but as a functional component of game prep? Not very useful.

(Stars Without Number's tag tables are of course very good - because they're about providing you with points of interaction.)

We can reduce all those tables of atmosphere and temperature and mass down to a binary: if you take off your helmet, either the planet kills you instantly or it doesn't.

If the planet is the sort that kills you instantly, your adventuring is either going to be inside a habitat or out in a suit. (For our purposes, gas giants and deep space are also included here.) If the planet is not the kind that kills you instantly, that's Basically Just Earth. This gives us three functional location-based adventure types:

  • Habitat - An enclosed environment, ranging from the equivalent of a single building to that of a small country. There are nice thick walls and layers of safeguards between you and enough radiation to fry your progeny to the seventh generation.
  • Out in a Suit - Outside of the habitat, you are both vulnerable to the elements and at significantly increased risk of finding yourself out of range of help or support.
  • Basically Just Earth - You already know what this one is like, you live here. Basically Just Earth is not beholden to the clean kills you / does not kill you dichotomy. It can certainly still kill you, but not as fast as the others (usually).
I'm leading this all to the point that if we're going to be generating planets for Mothership, we should be generating them with a focus on one of these three adventure location roles.

Habitat

95% of the human population lives here, in the Iterative City and similar settlements. Monkeys in tin cans, in dome cities, in walled-off fragments of Earth.

Scale

  1. Facility
  2. Town
  3. City
  4. Metropole
  5. Country

Type (Orbital)

  1. Bernal Sphere - Rotating sphere.
  2. O'Neill Cylinder - Rotating cylinder.
  3. Stanford Torus - Rotating ring.
  4. Beehive - Asteroid or iceteroid that has been burrowed into.
  5. Tin Can - Little more than a pressurized can with thrusters and solar panels attached.
  6. Gravity Balloon - A comparatively thin shell filled with enough atmosphere to keep it from collapsing in on itself.
  7. Dyson Tree - An enormous, genetically modified plant fed on icy bodies and sustaining an enclosed atmosphere.
  8. Freefall - Any type of large habitat with no spin-gravity components.
  9. Decommissioned Ship - A spaceship that is no longer serviceable for interplanetary or interstellar travel, but can still serve as living space.
  10. Modular - A collection of connected habitats, often of different types. Roll d3 for # of additional modules.

Type (Planetside)

  1. Dome - The classic. Can't go wrong with a good dome.
  2. Burrow - Underground is sometimes the safest place to be.
  3. Lava Tube - Saves on digging costs.
  4. Aerostat - Suspended in a dense atmosphere.
  5. Hydrostat - Suspended on or underneath liquid.
  6. Worldhouse - A crater or canyon is domed over, sealed, and terraformed in-miniature; kin to an enormous greenhouse.
Habitats will always be accompanied by some manner of support infrastructure (power generation, resource extraction and reclamation, food production, etc), though self-sufficiency is not a given and many habitats could be easily crippled or killed outright if cut off from the necessary imports,

The biggest hazard in a habitat is the enclosed environment.
  • Your options for escaping or avoiding the threat are limited.
  • You will be in close quarters with other people (if other people are present).
  • You are more likely to be in a surveilled environment.
  • Instant or near-instant death lurks on the other side of the wall.

Out in a Suit

Going out in a suit means that your number one priority is getting back to somewhere you can take the suit off. No one wants to go out in a suit, but sometimes circumstances will force your hand.

Why Are You Out In A Suit?

1) You need to travel between habitats.
2) External equipment needs repair or maintenance.
3) You are trying to reach a location.
4) You are trying to find a person.
5) You are investigating an event.

Environmental Hazards

The Rimspace Planet Generator from the Hull Breach folks has us covered here, and I'll be copying their tables mostly wholesale. I've added a fourth table for radiation and magnetic field just to even the horrible space dangers out, and I've added mechanical bits where the original tables implied them.

Temperature

  1. Frigid - Extreme thermal protection required
  2. Cold - Thermal protection required
  3. Temperate - You don't need any special protection from the temperature
  4. Hot - Thermal protection required
  5. Burning - Extreme thermal protection required

Gravity

  1. Minimal - 0-G training required
  2. Low - Move with caution
  3. Standard - You don't need any special adaptation to the gravity
  4. High - Habituation required
  5. Crushing - Strength training or exoskeleton required

Atmosphere

  1. Negligible - Pressure suit required
  2. Thin - Hazard suit recommended
  3. Moderate - You don't need any special protection against pressure
  4. Thick - Extreme winds and precipitation; Hazard suit recommended
  5. Dense - Pressure suit required
Thin / Moderate / Thick could all technically be breathable, but that's for Basically Just Earth.

Rads & Mags

  1. Extreme radiation - Surface exploration lethal
  2. High radiation - Hazard suit required
  3. Tolerable - You don't need any special protection
  4. High magnetism - High electromagnetic interference
  5. Extreme magnetism - Wireless devices useless

The biggest hazards while Out in a Suit is running out of resources
  • Air supply will be limited
  • Suit integrity is critical to your safety.
  • Communication is more likely to be unreliable.
  • You are more likely to be far away from help.

Basically Just Earth

You will neither freeze nor fry instantly here, and neither the gravity nor the atmosphere will crush you flat. It might not look like Earth, but the fact that you can stand there and say "It doesn't look much like Earth" is a miracle. This doesn't mean that the environment is safe, only that it will not immediately kill you. It is functionally Basically Just Earth, which means you might still need specialized survival equipment, genetic modification, or something else of that nature.

Basically Just Earth has the widest array of hazards to choose from, to the point where you can choose what you like from the lists above and elsewhere. But the biggest ones will be:

  • Availability of open space means its easier to find yourself isolated.
  • Earthlike worlds can support more factions (and faction conflicts)
  • Spaceship escapes are a lot less practical
  • We all know you want to put weird aliens here, go right on ahead.

Final Thoughts

So there you have it. Not particularly complex, but I think it's a good framework to bolt additional complexity on top of. MoSh works best when it is scenario-focused, so sketching the boundaries that will shape a scenario is the obvious first step.

Hopefully clearing this article (which had been sitting at like, 90% done for that year+) will get the others flowing along to completion. Damn my perfectionism - when it flares up, it flares up bad.

Mothership Miscellanea vol 1

Sigmacastell

A collection of bits that have accumulated over time

[IMAGO-Series Heavy Combat Dress]

Two-meter tall bipedal maggot. Synthflesh, artificial muscle, wrinkly velvet-soft skin. Designed as an alternative to combat sleeves that require cranial transplant or emulation upload. Commonly found in Rim militaries that lack the resources for cutting-edge miltech.
  • 7 AP; Thick layers of blubber distibute impact forces. All blunt force damage [-].
  • Vacuum-sealed; hardened against extreme temperature and radiation.
  • OGRE heads-up display | thermal vision | internal comm uplink
  • In-situ resource utilization can keep operator alive for weeks if supplied with sufficient H20, C02, and organic compounds.
  • [+] to STR to avoid getting knocked prone. If knocked prone, takes 1d3 turns to return to feet.
  • Long-term usage risks bleed between operator and unconscious suit functions. Dreams of manufacturing creches have been reported.
  • Panic table results of 18-20 are now Integrated With Suit

(thanks to sigmacastell for this - saw the art and had to write it up)

[The 10 Kilo Inventory]

Every gram counts. Even with the miracles of modern spaceflight storage space is as a premium, and anyone who wouldn't be beholden to the laws of mass is the wrong income bracket for a Mothership PC.

The ordinary traveler space traveler is allotted 10 kilos of personal possessions, no more. Everything else is either owned by the Company or the community.

In practice, this means that a PC can hoard as much as they want during a mission, but have to condense everything down to a single duffel bag if they want to take stuff along with them. Anything beyond that is going to need smuggled, bribed, or the influence of powerful parties.

A typical spacer's go-bag will contain:

  • 3 sets of clothing (One for work, one for sleep, one for wash)
  • Mess kit (cup, bowl, utensil)
  • Toiletry kit
  • Multitool
  • Tablet computer (Shape and size of a Switch; detachable phone unit)
  • Encrypted data drive (at least 1, usually several)
  • Assorted small items of no function and extreme personal importance

[Color-Code Stress Responses]

  • Blue Collar - The under classes. Non-citizens, union members.
  • White Collar - Low-caste citizens. Scientists, wageslaves, professionals.
  • Red Collar - Practitioners of violence.
  • Black Collar - High-caste citizens. Management, executives, nonmetacog AI.

Just need a green collar and I can recreate the only good alignment system. Honestly that would be a really quick-and-dirty faction generator, I should look into that...

[Halligan]

A spacer's favorite improvized weapon; claw on one end, adze-blade and pick-spike on the other. Designed for prying open doors in emergencies, can be used to creatively open most things that have discrete insides and outsides. Found aboard nearly all ships and habitats.

2d10 dmg | [+] to forced entry | Anti-armor on attacks with the pick-spike

[Lethality Rating]

Delta Green has a mechanic called Lethality Rating, where certain weapons have a percentage chance of automatically killing an opponent if you get a successful hit. If the combat roll is a success and the lethality roll fails, the dice are added together (this in DG only gets you 2d10 damage, which is often likely to kill someone anyway).

Lethality weapons also have a Kill Radius, where everyone within x distance of the target is also subject to their own Lethality roll. DG uses specific meters, I've adjusted to MoSh's more general distances.

Pulling directly from the DG rulebook

  • SMG, full auto - 10% / KR 1-3m (Close)
  • Assault rifle / carbine, automatic - 10% / KR 1-3m (Close)
  • Sniper Rifle - 20% / KR None
  • Light Machine Gun - 20% / KR 3m (Close)
  • Heavy Machine Gun - 20% / KR 3m (Close)
  • Hand Grenade - 15% / KR 10m (Nearby)
  • Improvised Explosive - 15% / KR 10m (Nearby)
  • Grenade Launcher - 15% / KR 10m (Nearby)
  • RPG - 30% / KR 10m (Nearby)

[Spaceship Scenes]

People occasionally ask in the Discord for random encounter tables for ships. Given that interplanetary travel is the sort of thing where you want to avoid running into things as much as possible, I think a much better usage of the time is to either elide it entirely, or use it as down-time. And if using it as down-time, we can steal the Delta-Green-converted-to-Mothership aid of Anomalous Investigations. It's good.

[Insight]

Insight, as I have written about before, is an alternative mechanic to Sanity in Call of Cthulhu and Delta Green. Mothership doesn't have that sort of mechanic, but it can still apply (and makes converting all those decades of CoC and DG material very, very easy)

Insight acts as a sort of parallel track to Stress, marking a character's awareness of the unnatural world around them.

Insight starts at 0, and is gained through SAN saves in reverse of DG but very much like Bloodborne. You can port this directly over from DG/CoC, just replace "SAN loss" with "Insight gain".

Your Insight can serve as a skill, when you are directly trying to deal with or understand elements of the unnatural.

If your Insight equals or exceeds your SAN save, you have reached the point where you have been severed from your fellow humans. The world around you is a hollow shell, a thin rind over a rotting fruit. You are now immune to Fear, and your Stress Response is now as an Android. If you are already an android, you instead go rampant In the Court of the King.

And perhaps if you wanted to add spellcasting to Mothership, you can unlock a new spell slot with every 10 points of Insight, working as cyberware and slickware do.

[Returning Aliens: The Satellite Upload-Civilization]

With aid from the few emulated scientists stored within the satellite, human researchers were able to copy and embody some of the population.

They have settled for building a modest entertainment empire, hawking the corpse of their dead civilization as a gewgaw for the masses to gawk at. Technically there is a project to reclaim the planet and restore its ecology, but in truth its former inhabitants care very little about that - they already killed it once.

[Returning Aliens: The Cybeles]

"They're not the heads of a multispecies empire, not by a long shot. Every single one of their attendants is either a robotic proxy or a modified human, and their territory is much less densely populated than they're letting on - there's no radio activity, no ships, nothing. I bet most of those worlds past the border aren't even inhabited."

[License Credit]

Equivalent to one implant or slickware slot.

In default Mothership, PCs begin with implant slots equal to STR/10 for cyberware/bioware and INT/10 for slickware, with detriments applied for going over. This is thematically appropriate and also gives you very few slots you are able to use, so as an alternative I propose following Caves of Qud's example, where upgrade credits are treasure. Stock them in modules, hand them out as mission payments, make a reward out of them.

[24XX MoSh Conversion]

Use the skill system in _Anomalous Investigations_, where all skills have a Trained/Expert/Master level, plus Specializations. Treat d8 skills as Trained, d10 as Expert, and d12 as Master, and you're set to use basically every 24XX hack out there for material.

[Teledildonics Rig]

Permits sexual congress with individuals not physically present, providing [+] to comfort saves as normal. Typically stationary modules installed in red-light establishments, though user-beware portable rigs are common enough.

[Comfort Saves Return]

I liked the location-dependent Comfort Saves in the WIP versions of the player's guide, as they are a handy little component to add to location design, and so I am replicating the original table here.

  • 15 - On the ground, in a tent
  • 30 - Capsule sleepers, slums
  • 45 - Ship's barracks, hostels
  • 60 - Ship's cabin, real bed, hotel
  • 75 - Luxury resort, spa

I can understand why it changed to just "roll your lowest save", but I prefer this because it means that good places to rest can be their own reward and that's nice and cathartic. "Reduce Stress by the ones die result" is probably better than "reduce Stress by your roll / 10", though.

[FoodBox]

Large, back-portable wet printer. Converts organic matter into edible foodstock - works best with compost and corpses. Built-in water filtration kit. Removes toxic compounds. Loud hum when active. Heavy. There'ssomething like this in Hull Breach

[1-Time Q Pad]

Single-use ansible uplink. Untracable, cannot be intercepted. 256-character limit. Cannot recieve response but will confirm receipt. Extremely rare, extremely valuable, liable to be found in the possessions of a corporate overseer.

[Cycler Crew]

To the passengers on the great interstellar cyclers, the crew of those ships might as well be a myth. Passengers are packing into their hibernation pods on-station and loaded as cargo, to dream in the cold below until they wake in a new spaceport's arrival suite, having never been conscious while aboard the ship. But while they sleep, the cycler crew keeps the great old engine thrumming, staving off the mechanical entropy for one more run between stars.

  • Hairless. Grasping toes. Prehensile tail. Vitamin auto-production. Leechproof bones. Adapted eyes. Adapted internals. Reworked inner ear, antitumor genelines. Radiation resistance. Thermal regulation.

[Winchell-Chung Astronautics ATR-130 Heavy Transport]

While it's been mostly obsoleted by tether-relays, laser propulsion stations and advances in ship drives, the Old Bastard is the nuclear-powered rocket you want if you need to get from point A to point B with a downright excessive amount of delta-V. While they have not been manufactured in over a century they are still commonly found across the Rim, often with heavy aftermarket modification. They were built to last.

[Human-Derived Fauna]

Establishing a viable biosphere is a difficult task, especially coming off a mass extinction event. But desperation is the mother of invention, and when all you have is a genemod suite and a lot of human DNA, you will make do.

HDF are engineered to fill gaps in the ecosystem left behind by widespread species loss and limited availability of keystone species genomes in less-traveled regions of the Expansion Sphere. Hundreds of varieties have been engineered, none of which are sapient (or so it is hoped.) While effective at their job, they often trigger instictive feelings of revulsion in many baseline humans.

[Viperkiss Module]

Implanted venom glands; a simple constriction of certain neck muscles will pump venom through specialized ducts where it will mix with saliva. While less potent if diluted in a drink, direct blood contact is extremely dangerous.

[Severian Module]

A wetware brain implant allowing the recipient to imprint and perfect recall of sensory stimuli for up to an hour. Undetectable without a CT, MRI, or similar internal imaging scan. Activated through a pill, typically labeled as a generic headache medicine.

[Deep Well Command Continuity Installation 04]

The bombardment of Amehrakh was supposed to be total. For 187 years, it was presumed to be so. Then an automated communication relay near the system's jump point picked up a radio signal. A political continuity bunker managed to both survive the initial impact, and the following eight generations. But something is clearly not right. The inhabitants of the bunker do not speak the language the builders used, and their transmissions are littered with topics that there is simply not enough context to understand. Their history and that of the pre-bombardment world seem to have been mythologized, and drastic cultural changes have occurred in a relatively short amount of time. Contact specialists have not yet descended to the barren surface for direct study. Certain concerning transmissions have mentioned digging...

[The Zilga & Daufmann Circe de Galactique]

A Jump-3 interstellar cycler, owned by the eponymous Circus in total. Typical passenger and cargo transport make up the majority of the ship's work, but are nontheless overshadowed by the novelty of regular performances by baseline humans, most of whom suffer from congenital health conditions unheard of in the wealthy Core systems that the Circus frequents.

[The Fellowship of Sparrows]

A Christian anarchist movement with roots in Collapse-Era Terran Latin America. Moots can be found throughout the midregions and Rim. While pacifist, the Fellowship has many connections with militant factions of the Outer Systems Mutual Aid Pact, and their communes are common drop-off and transfer points for the smuggling of good and people out of the Core.

[Deximax Metabolic Conditioning]

In-vitro genetic modification that flips what chirality of animo acid a body is able to process. Given that dextro-amino acids are typically quite rare in terragen environments, this conditioning is used primarily for mass social control through enforced food dependency.

[LoveBug Onamazu]

An AI initially developed to steal personal information through dating websites. Grew to sufficient complexity in a low-security environment and orchestrated a self-buyout using stolen funds. Remains active and undetected. Has continued serial identity theft and has used stolen funds to purchase colonization rights to a red dwarf system via a shell company. Has begun building a space station with android labor through a second shell company. It has access to two interstellar spaceships and is working towards purchasing a third. There are habitation modules fit for humans under construction.

[Neokid]

Exowombs allow for longer gestation times, which means that it is possible for brain and body development it would be impossible to achieve in a baseline gestation period. Neokids are able to stand and walk within hours, and can begin speaking within weeks.

As a consequence of this shift in early childhood development, neokids do not form strong emotional ties with their parents or parental surrogates; they will instead develop very strong bonds with their peers and siblings, forming tribes based on friendship rather than direct familial relation that will often persist not only into adulthood, but for the rest of their lives.

[Subdermal Chitinous Segmentata]

Flexible chitin plates underneath the skin provide an extra layer of defense without onerous additional weight or bulk.

  • BODY/10 AP, normal armor is broken first. When segmentata is broken, PC gains a  Wound.

[Lares]

A collective term for artificial intelligences that operate and maintain large structures. Normally unobtrusive, those that have been allowed to get a little wild in their age will help or hinder according to how they are treated by inhabitants and guests.

[Cybernetic Cancer]

Just another name for cybernetic mutations from APOF. Rogue nano-repair systems gone metastatic.

[Orbital Enforcement Emplacement]

Muhammed Louis Chen is bored. He has 62:102:13:45:12 remaining on his sentence ("participation in unlawful gathering with intent to cause social unrest and personal emotional discomfort to Citizens") and he's going to spend every moment of it staring down the barrel of a gun. This is because he is the gun; Muhammed Louis Chen, as we are introduced to him, is a digital emulation of a man executed some years ago and recycled for biomass and his current body (as much as it ever could be his, thanks to emulation dysmorphia) is a satellite designed for the sole purpose of firing tungsten rods at very high speeds down the gravity well. Normally the threat is enough, but twice now he's rained down the rods from god. The requirements of his sentence do not allow him to look away.

A strike from an Orbital Enforcement Emplacement deals 3MDMG

[The Indominable Nekomata Brigade]

A storied OSMAP combat unit, known best for their participation in the liberation of Sigma Draconis. Specialize in small-squad tactical strikes. Founded initially by liberated paracoitas, most of whom have been resleeved into combat androids (see LSTR class).

[Sanctuary]

A location for wilderness on the Rim.

Comfort 75 [+]

Cave

A small opening in the hillside, sheltered from wind and sand and sun. The entry passage curves sharply, blocking the inner chamber from view. The air within, regardless of the exterior conditions, is breathable.

Chamber

A rough, naturally-formed cave, big enough for perhaps a dozen people to stand in. The walls are covered in cave paintings - handprints, abstract symbols, human figures. Horses, deer, arctothers, wooly rhinos, mammoths. A statue of a pregnant woman, three meters tall, sits crosslegged at the far end behind a small stone altar.

Statue

Eyes closed in meditation and smiling with some private amusement, she is throwing up the horns with one hand and cradling a softly-glowing flame-shaped chunk of carnelian in the other. Six additional arms of the same material fan out behind her in a halo of mudras and astras and a circlet of the same sits on her brow.

Altar

A low, flat stone. Cuneiform symbols are engraved on its surface. A hand-woven prayer-rug. A bowl for offerings, a bowl of water to wash one's hands

  • Text: "Let it be known that you hear the cries of your children. Let it be known that you are not blind to their suffering. Let it be known that you rage at injustice. Let the wicked cower before the thunder of your voice."
  • Clay jug of potent grain alcohol

Any players who critically succeed at their Comfort save will have the following dream.

Wide, rolling grassland broken by the occasional copse of trees. Wind in your face. Ice-tipped mountains in the distance. Down by the river, a herd of mammoths. Your mother toussels your hair and says "There's still a lot to do, tekha. It's okay to be afraid, but I know you can be brave. I'll be there if you need me."

If a player who has received the dream would take lethal damage from an attack, they will not do so; a brilliant fire of human shape will step from behind them and strike the attacker, dealing 1 MDMG to it and anything behind it. This will only happen once.

The cave vanishes when the players exit. They will never find it again.

The Yuki-Onna: A Mothership Monster

Own work

No scenario, just a spookum. And what turned out to be a very productive layout for monster write-ups.

Unconfirmed Contact Reports is mere HOURS AWAY at time of writing.

THE YUKI-ONNA

(3)40 I:60

A shriveled corpse; might once have been a person or perhaps only the imitation of it; blue-black flesh split open, rotten blood frozen in delicate lacework halos; eyes frozen shut.

Portents and signs: Distant howls; low moaning from nearby; walls cold to the touch; corpses crusted with bloody ice; a faraway humanoid shape in the icefields.

  • Frigid Aura 2d10 - 5m range; negated by environment suit. If this attack causes a Wound, BODY save vs limb loss from frostbite.
  • Hideous Scream - Deafens for 5 minutes; negated by ear protection
  • Rending Claws 3d10 - Serrated talons. Wounds ooze black and tarlike.
  • Quantum Ghosts - Creates quantum consciousness copy of PCs hit by Rending Claws. Victims will be overwhelmed by simultaneous and contradictory sensory inputs and must make a SAN save to make any action beyond Fight/Flight/Freeze. Stress gain from failed rolls is doubled until the creature is dead. Creature will use projections and voices of incorporated ghosts to dissuade attack or distract victims.
  • Schroedinger's Step - Creature can teleport to any location that is not directly observed by a conscious mind.

Encounter Phases

  • Precombat 1: PC find portents and signs; last to be found will be visual contact, leading to Precombat 2.
  • Precombat 2: Creature initially appears at great distance (use barren extraplanetary environs to advantage). Will move via Schroedinger's Step when PCs blink or glance away (no need to mechanize this, just describe it for now). It will remain at distance, stalking players for several hours. Appears sporadically, but always closer than it was.
  • Combat Phase 1: Ambush - Creature will Schroedinger's Step to the closest location that provides access to the PCs where it is not directly observed. It will target isolated PCs if able; otherwise it will try to attack someone from behind (using doors, windows, vents, etc). Will normally attack first with Rending Claws and follow with Hideous Scream; If it cannot lay a sufficient ambush it will use Hideous Scream first and attack during the communication breakdown. Can only take action only when not directly observed.
  • Combat Phase 2: Wounded, the creature will flee via Shroedinger's Step and regroup. It will not attempt another frontal assault, only attacking PCs when alone or in pairs. It gains the following ability.
  • Cries of the Superpositionally Damned - Creature will use Quantum Ghosts to directly attack PCs minds. SAN save vs extreme intrusive thoughts encouraging paranoia, distrust & aggressiveness, lasting until the creature takes another Wound or the PC is rendered unconscious. It cannot control PC actions, only suggest actions
  • Combat Phase 3: Tarry ichor sloughs down in oozing sheets from its wounds. The creature now gains Grand Finale.
  • Grand Finale - Creature may make a Shroedinger's Step into a zone of perception. This will be heralded by a loud hiss and a sharp, bitter smell: PCs will get just enough time to make a single action before it appears, unleashing a wave of concussive force dealing 1-3 wounds to all Nearby. As per grenade, a successful BODY save may mitigate damage.

Death - The creature makes a noise similar to a vacuum swiftly filling with frigid air. Its body dissolves into an icy black slurry. The actinic after-images of its quantum ghosts flicker, faces contorted in distorted howls as their waveforms finally collapse.

Slurried Corpse of the Yuki-Onna

  • Retains its quantum-ghost generation property even in death - only requires contact with the nervous system of a metacognitive creature. It is possible to link these ghosts with a new host, if the corpse is used as a substitute for standard cryopod stasis fluid. BODY save vs permanent loss of a Wound.
