There's an attempt to keep it within known science (possible, if not probable), but it can certainly feel soft as cheese in places (especially when dealing with the omnipresent AI gods), though that's typically what happens when you have omnipresent AI gods around for most of a 10k year long timeline.<br /><br />I like it both for the sheer variety in the material - on the one hand, you have AI gods that are building pocket universes to use as calculators or building planets out of antimatter.
